Cluster headaches are not like other headaches. They’re not like “headaches” at all. There is no ‘finishing up at work with a headache’, no driving back home with a headache. Cluster ATTACKS will STOP YOU IN YOUR TRACKS causing you to focus 100% on the terrible pain it’s inflicting on you at the moment. You have NO CHOICE. The pain is SO INTENSE that it’s hard to even communicate with others when having an attack.
One of my fears is that when I do get hit in public places, I worry that someone who does not understand what this is will call the police and / or EMS and that would only complicate things for me. Police / EMS will want to talk and find out what is going on while the attack is in progress. They will want to take you to an ER (Or to a psych ward / jail) because of the actions many sufferers display.
During an attack, I, like most sufferers, prefer to be alone and seek out a private place to deal with the torture session that has been dealt to me. This is sometimes hard to do depending on the location but I try to ALWAYS have medication on my person (Imitrex injections for me) and I try to ALWAYS have a private place to go incase of attack. Often, that ‘private place’ ends up being my own vehicle while in public.
If you suffer from cluster headaches, even if you’re episodic, this is a reminder to try to ALWAYS BE PREPARED (As best as you can) with the medications that are helpful to you. If someone else is with you, make sure they know what you’d want them to do incase of an attack. (ie. Leave me alone for a little while, check on me in 20 minutes, GTFO of here, etc…). Being prepared for an attack and letting others know what to do (And what not to do) can be very helpful in the event of an attack. The last thing you would want to do is to try to explain what is going on to others while in the midst of an ATTACK. It may even seem impossible to communicate properly and in an intelligent manner while in such horrific pain.
I wrote this reminder because I had ANOTHER attack while out in public today. I was able to get to my vehicle and take Imitrex. It was a total bitch. An extremely painful torture session.
The beast shows NO FEAR, NO MERCY and can attack at ANY TIME night or day. BE PREPARED CLUSTER WARRIORS. You might feel like you lost a battle but CLUSTER WARRIORS cannot lose the war.
“Pray for peace but prepare for war” !!
